ABIA is a member based organisation that supports the autism community. ABIA provide the following services;

Information sessions (for new parents of ASD child)

Has your child recently been diagnosed with autism? If so, this information session is the place to start. Our presenter will provide information on "starting an ABA program" and "funding options". Parents will have an opportunity to meet other parents and ask questions in a friendly and relaxed environment.

Presentations

ABIA offers presentations suitable for professionals working in early learning centres, kindergartens, schools, universities, GPs, Psychologists, OTs, Speech Pathologists and other organisations working with children with ASD.

Our presenters are tertiary qualified and have extensive practical experience in working directly with individuals with ASD, and their families. The presentation material is current and supported by the latest research in the ASD field, so you can be assured the information you receive will be grounded in best practice.

Seminars

Based on the principles of Applied Behavioural Analysis, ABIA's two hour seminar topics are suitable for professionals, parents and carers wanting to gain practical skills and apply them in everyday settings (home, school, social). Our topics include;

  • Choosing curriculum - "deciding what a child needs to learn"
  • Programs for high functioning children with autism

Workshops

ABIA training workshops are hosted by guest speakers (local and international) who are renowned in the field of autism and related disorders. The workshops are aimed at imparting the latest information and skills from the autism sector.

In 2009 ABIA sponsored Dr Jeanette McAfee, author of the acclaimed book "Navigating the social world", to present at Monash University in Melbourne. Dr McAfee presented a one-day workshop where participants listened to a variety of social/emotional skill and were shown techniques used to blend elements of cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), applied behavioural analysis (ABA), theatre arts and standard education techniques used to teach social-emotional skills.

Regional Training

ABIA is aware of the difficulties associated with raising a child with autism and then living in a remote part of Victoria to try and access training you desperately need. To help aide these issues ABIA will travel to parts of Regional Victoria and deliver any of our training packages suitable for parents, carers and professionals.

Training

ABIA's training programs are developed by qualified educators who have worked with children on the autism spectrum for several years. Our training programs are offered in-house, or for large group bookings can be delivered at a location of preference.

Resource Library

The resource library is exclusive to ABIA members. Our extensive catalogue of books, games, flash cards, DVD's and other resources can be borrowed to assist you during your child's program.

Donations and grants contribute to replenishing and upgrading the much needed resources ABIA offer. Members benefit from the variety and range kept in the resource library. One of the main benefits of borrowing from our library is not having to outlay your own funds to buy a resource you may only need to use for a short period.
