The information presented
in this section of the website is aimed at providing an overview of
the assistance ABIA can give to Teachers and School Support Staff
working with children with ASD. THE
BENEFITS OF ABA IN THE CLASSROOM
More and more children with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are
entering the mainstream education system. Many teaching staff feel
they need more training to cater to the special needs of this group
and to avoid making school a negative experience for all.
The ABIA has compiled a comprehensive information pack for
schools.

TEACHING SOCIAL SKILLS
The teaching of social skills plays a vital role in enabling children
and adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorders to adapt to mainstream
society, but how can that be done within a school environment?
ABIA’s new 3-day intensive workshop has been specially designed
for Teachers, school support staff and other professionals who work
with children on the Autism Spectrum and is based on the ‘Social
Club Model’.
Participants learn how to develop their own social skills groups.
Through small group work, role plays and discussion, the Workshop
equips them with a range of new strategies and ideas.
The Social Club Model is aimed primarily at children between the
ages of 10 & 14 years of age. However, it can be adapted for
other age groups. All participants receive a copy of the ABIA Social
Skills Manual as part of the workshop price, thus passing on the
benefits to others in their school.
Topics covered in the program include:
• An introduction to the
Social Club model
• Inclusion & integration philosophies
• Notes on forming groups
• Prompting & reinforcing
• Developing group and individual
goals
• Teaching activities for groups
• Outdoor activities
• Relaxation exercises
• Sample lesson plans
• Debriefing parents
