Professionals

This section of the website is aimed at providing an overview of the assistance ABIA can offer Teachers and School Support Staff working with children with ASD.

The benefits of Behaviour Therapy in the classroom

More and more children with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are entering the mainstream education system. Teaching staff require more training to cater to the special needs of this group and to avoid making school a negative experience for all.

ABIA has compiled a comprehensive information pack for schools. Click here to download the pack or contact ABIA on (03) 9830 0677 or info@abia.net.au.

Teaching Social Skills

The teaching of social skills plays a vital role in enabling children and adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorders adapt to mainstream society; but how can this be achieved within a school environment?

ABIA's 3-day intensive workshop has been specially designed for Teachers, school support staff and professionals who work with children on the Autism Spectrum. The course is based on the 'Social Club Model'.

Participants learn how to develop their own social skills groups. Through small group work, role plays and discussion, the workshop equips participants with a range of new strategies and ideas to explore.

The Social Club Model is aimed primarily at children between the ages of 10 & 14 years. However, it can be adapted for other age groups. All participants receive a copy of the ABIA Social Skills Manual as part of the workshop price, thus passing on the benefits to your school.

Topics covered in the program include:

  • An introduction to the Social Club model
  • Inclusion & integration philosophies
  • Notes on forming groups
  • Prompting & reinforcing
  • Developing group and individual goals
  • Teaching activities for groups
  • Outdoor activities
  • Relaxation exercises
  • Sample lesson plans
  • Debriefing parents

Concessional rates apply for group bookings of 8 participants or more. For an obligation free quote, contact ABIA on (03) 9830 0677 or info@abia.net.au.
