About ABIA

The Autism Behavioural Intervention Association (ABIA) provides training, education and support to parents, carers, and professionals working with children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). This includes children with a diagnosis of Autism, Asperger Syndrome, or Pervasive Development Disorder-Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS).

ABIA is committed to raising awareness of Applied Behavioural Analysis (ABA) and other effective methods of care and treatment for children with an ASD. ABIA is also dedicated to broadening the public perception and understanding of Autism Spectrum Disorders.

History

Time and time again history reveals that those persons most affected or impacted are instrumental in bringing about change. Similarly, ABIA was formed by a determined group of parents frustrated that a scientifically proven method of intervention - Applied Behavioural Analysis (ABA) - was not available in Australia. With clear evidence that ABA could bring about positive behavioural, cognitive, and social changes, this parent group recruited professionals from the United States to set up programs and provide training workshops in Australia. As a result ABIA was formed as a not-for-profit organisation in 1996/97.

In the fourteen+ years since our inception ABIA, its supporters, volunteers and stakeholders have worked in the areas of advocacy and awareness, promoting and positioning ABA therapy as a viable and sought-after option for families with an ASD child. The result is a peak industry body with the infrastructure and expertise to assist families, carers and professionals to better support ASD children.

ABIA is a member-based organisation overseen by a Committee of Management. Membership gives access to our Autism Resource Library, our highly sought-after quarterly Newlsetter, and reduced fees on all our training courses.
